Brave New Normal—A Virtual Parable
Brave New Normal is the original adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, translocated to a world, very similar to ours, in which mankind, for the sake of fairness and safety, lives isolated in an unreal bubble—“the New Normal”—subordinated to its own inventions: science, technology and social organisation.

Paper Moon: Jazz in the City Murakami and Jazz
Paper Moon: Jazz in the City brings together some of Malaysia’s finest musicians in two complementary back-to-back concerts. The second, Murakami and Jazz, presents a unique tribute to one of Japan’s greatest cultural icons, Haruki Murakami. As one of the best-known and most critically acclaimed writers working today, Murakami himself has had a lifelong love affair with all kinds of music, and especially jazz. His writing constantly draws inspiration and quotes from his favourite musicians. This unique multimedia concert combines three artistic elements: the narration of a specially written script based on Murakami’s words – from novels, short stories and essays – featuring Marina Tan and Gareth Richards as the two narrators; music directly referenced in Murakami’s texts and originals composed by Tay Cher Siang as a response to them, featuring WVC Jazz, Rizal Tony, and singers Junji Delfino and Janet Lee; and a projected montage of images drawn from art and photography, including the work of leading Japanese artists. By presenting the interplay of words and music and images – as in a three-dimensional conversation – this concert draws attention to a sometimes overlooked facet of Murakami’s literary output and showcases the creative response of Malaysian performing artists to a great writer.
G-Short Film Screenings: Finalists 2021
G-Short is a short film festival held as part of the George Town Festival 2021 to celebrate the endless imagination and possibilities a 90-second short film can bring about. Themed “Reimagine: A New Way of Seeing”, with the tagline “Short Yet Powerful”, G-Short was conceived to encourage the local and international film communities to create short-form and original films, unleashing their creativity, originality and innovation to tell stories in new ways – all while strengthening the branding of the George Town Festival. The film screenings feature the works of 30 finalists from different countries.
Paper Moon: Jazz in the City Purnama
Paper Moon: Jazz in the City brings together some of Malaysia’s finest musicians in two complementary back-to-back concerts. The first, Purnama, is a premiere of the latest album from the award-winning group WVC Jazz. For this special occasion, they are joined by renowned names: guitarist Rizal Tony, saxophonist Yow Weng Wai, Ng Chor Guan playing the theremin, Tan Jie on shakuhachi (end-blown flute), together with singers Junji Delfino, Janet Lee, Jo and Tan Chee Shen. Purnama – a bright full moon – takes its inspiration from the music and songs of a different age: the era of Merdeka, when a new country was in the making. The lyrics of that time were beautiful, the sentiments hopeful, and the melodies grew out of the rich soil of this land. With all their eccentricities, foibles and imperfections, people lived together and shared a common musical language. And the image of a new moon seems somehow to capture the spirit of those times. Come and listen to great classic songs – “Hitam Manis”, “Main Shayar to Nahin”, “Putera Puteri”, “Penang Samba”, “Song of Crossing at Dawn” and more – in sparkling contemporary arrangements.
Down the Melting Pot
Drawing upon the associations between people, culture and place, and relating it to the concept of a hot pot cuisine, “Down the Melting Pot” will bring audiences into an intercultural journey through the perspectives of young contemporary artists, whom in particular, often welcome the possibilities of forging memories, empathy and meaning with the cultural constructs of a place as they spark the inspirations and impulses to create. With a varied selection of moving images from around the world, including experimental shorts, video art, animation and performance art, the exhibition will highlight the myriad of sensibilities, cogitation and imagination made possible with intercultural exchange between people and people, and between people and place. The diverse works will each express a unique commentary about an individual or a collective issue as inspired by the cultural experience in a specific setting – ranging from the spread of popular media, consumerism and technology; the impacts of gentrification; to the abstract ideas of the self and relationships. Audiences are also encouraged to reflect upon the peculiar symbiotic connections between people, culture and place, through the artists’ unique interpretations of their personal encounters with different geographical locations. The screening will be followed by a discussion participated by artists Shir Handelsman, Sujin Lim, Chulayarnnon Siriphol and Gianluca Abbate, as well as curators Jaxton Su and Nien-Ting Chen.
Perspectives
See the world through the eyes of a blind woman, take a walk in the shoes of a wheelchair user, and learn how disability brings new perspectives to artmaking in “Perspectives”, a disability-led film directed by Peggy Ferroa and Michael Chua. Part documentary, part theatrical monologue, “Perspectives” is an independent project which explores the lives of Singaporeans with disabilities, told through music, monologues and works of art. It also features soundscapes by the Harmony Community Choir, a choir that primarily consists of young adult choral singers with autism and other learning disabilities. The stories by Lim Lee Lee, Victor Tan, and Stephanie Esther Fam are bound to cast a stark light on the community's unseen challenges, unheard voices, and unspoken desires. The docudrama screening will be followed by a discussion featuring the performers and the director Peggy Ferroa.
"Immerse" Concert 《沉淀》音乐会
Currently residing in three separate countries, three local musicians will be brought together virtually to take audiences on a deeper dive into the different styles and periods of the Chinese orchestra music in “Immerse”. In this online concert, musicians Chow Jun Yi (New York, United States), Tan Yong Yaw (Malacca, Malaysia), and Raymond Choo Boon Yew (Macau, China) – who studied traditional Chinese instruments and music in mainland China – will take audiences on an unforgettable musical journey which is segmented into three parts: the traditional music repertoires that reflect the heritage and history of the Chinese; contemporary works which seek the power of immersion in the future time and space; and works which trigger deep thinking on multiculturalism and Chinese music culture in Malaysia while they are away from home. After all, it is through the accumulation of knowledge and real-life insights that enables people to re-recognise the past, the present, and the future.
