Based on the legendary Malay folklore, “Mahsuri” which tells the story of a woman vengefully accused of adultery due to her beauty and innocence and executed by stabbing. SURI intends to explore the intrinsic qualities of the legendary character “Mahsuri”, and to establish a robust link between the traditional values her story holds the present-day topics. Delving into the key motifs and elements in the “Mahsuri” story, SURI in highlighting issues of slander and shaming, interprets the significance of these aspects of today’s context.

Synopsis

SURI intends to explore the intrinsic qualities of the legendary character “Mahsuri”, and to establish a robust link between the traditional values her story holds the present-day topics. Delving into the key motifs and elements in the “Mahsuri” story, SURI in highlighting issues of slander and shaming, interprets the significance of these aspects of today’s context.

The objectives of this production are to provide a platform for dancers to showcase talents in traditional, contemporary and new creations, to sustain the appreciation of Malay Performing Arts forms amongst local and international audience and to promote Malay culture and the arts, especially with heartland community.

This production marks a genuine effort of the founders, Abdul Yazid Juhuri and Amin Farid with the youth choreographers, Nurul Farahani and Hidayat Zainal to further stretch the learning curves of aspiring dance-makers. The production seeks to develop versatile and adaptable dancers in the long runs and moving forward, this collaboration had great potential to provide a refreshing outlook of the relevance of Malay traditional art forms in this present day.

We hope that this production will call upon our modern-day youths and people to recognize the value in our traditional arts as well as to foster a sense of appreciation and cultivation of the Malay culture, traditions and folktales that are inherently grounded and steeped with key values that are salient in the Malay community.
