About This Event

Since 2009, indigenous communities across Malaysia have faced increasing threats to their ancestral lands. Rapid deforestation, extractive industries, and weak forest governance have led to the destruction of sacred forests, polluted rivers, and the erosion of cultural lifeways that have existed for centuries.

This environmental talk brings together activists, allies, and the public to stand in solidarity with Orang Asli communities, particularly in light of ongoing land rights struggles such as the one faced by the Temiar people of Kampung Kelaik.

Hosted in collaboration with Greenpeace Malaysia, the session features Heng Kiah Chun, lead campaigner, who will share insights into the intersection of climate action, indigenous resistance, and forest governance in Malaysia.

What this event seeks to do

  • Raise awareness on the threats faced by indigenous communities in forested regions
  • Highlight the importance of indigenous-led conservation and ancestral land protection
  • Explore how stronger forest governance is essential to real climate action

Why it matters

When forests are destroyed, it is not only the environment that suffers. It is the communities who live closest to the land who lose their homes, heritage, and rights.

To protect the future, we must listen to those who have been protecting the forest all along.
