About This Event

Az Samad started performing poetry before learning to ride a bicycle. At eight years old, he took the stage at Auditorium DBKL reading a poem by his father, Malaysian national laureate A. Samad Said. Since then, he has had to recite poetry for almost every school event. As a kid, he wrote about pirates, teenage love, repressed anger from societal expectations, and occasionally about cats.

After his school years, he put down the pen and picked up the guitar. Along the way, he became a 3-time TEDx Speaker, recorded with Grammy Winners Flaco Jiménez & Max Baca; graduated & taught for the Summer Guitar Sessions at Berklee College of Music, and performed in the USA, Europe & Asia.

After 29 years in music, he revisited poetry as therapy. Az completed a project of writing 100 poems in Malay and is still writing more. For the Klang River Festival, Az will debut a special curated set of poetry and music.
